Review: Models Prefer Starter Face Brush Set + Tutorial

Hello, I'm going to be doing a little review on a brush set which I bought recently from Priceline. The brand is called 'Models Prefer' which is a brand that is only seen in Priceline and is Australian. I've owned a palette from them and I must say, the quality wasn't good. It's worth the money but it really can't be compared to drugstore makeup :/ I noticed that their eyeshadows have low pigmentation and feel quite chalky. Although their palettes are around $5 each, I really don't think I'll be purchasing Models Prefer eye makeup again.

I had a glance at their section in Priceline and I noticed that they now have a range of brush sets. A starter eye and face brush set. The eye brush set consists of about 6 brushes and was on sale for $7.95. It tempted me but I realised that I already had all the eye brushes that this Models Prefer set was offering. Their Starter Face Brush set attracted me though and I purchased it straight away. On sale for $9.95 was a set of 4 face brushes - concealer, foundation, angled blush and powder.

Lovely gold pouch, it looks like a purse. This would be ideal for travelling

- Instructions on the left, perfect for beginners
- Extra protection on the brush heads
- Magnetic button on the inside to close

They look quite professional with the wrapping around the brushes
The angled blush and the powder brushes have brush guards :)

The names on the brushes is really helpful for beginners :)

I am totally sold about the appearance of these brushes. It doesn't seem as though they have been clumsily designed or packaged and for the price, it's pretty good. I know that they may have used cheap plastic but usually one brush of any other brand costs $10+ dollars so having 4 of these for that price isn't bad at all.

My main reason for purchasing this brush set was to find a replacement or an alternative foundation brush for my Ecotools one. I've had the Ecotools one for almost half a year and the quality is wearing off. The brush was really good at the start but now it's no good with applying foundation...

L-R: Ecotools and Models Prefer
My Ecotools brush hairs have gone poofy and fluffy!
So not what it's meant to be like :(

I bent the hairs of both brushes and the Ecotools one stayed in that position :/
It's starting to look more like a blush brush instead of a foundation brush

Currently my Ecotools brush is streaking on me like crazy! It leaves all these lines on my face and it doesn't smooth out my foundation properly. Thank goodness I found a cheaper and possibly long-term replacement foundation brush :) It does the job well

Models Prefer Foundation Brush: 5/5
I really hope that the quality doesn't wear out like my Ecotools, but I won't be surprised if it does. I've only spot-cleaned it (using a moist towel) and I haven't seen any shedding of hair.

I don't normally use concealer but I still wanted to have a concealer brush, just to add to my brush collection. I'm glad that I could find a cheap concealer brush that is quite dense and does the job well. I actually tested this out with a concealer and also with my foundation. Instead of using concealer, I also like to use a bit of foundation with the concealer brush to cover up any blemishes. My foundation has really good coverage and when I don't feel the need to pack on foundation, I can just use a bit of it as concealer!

This is the tallest brush in the set, I don't know why they aren't all the same height...

Models Prefer Concealer Brush: 5/5
The hairs are dense but not too dense to make it hard for concealer to be applied on my face. Again, this has only been spot-cleaned however, there was still no shedding of hair.

Now with the angle blush brush, I can compare its quality with my Sigma angle blush brush which I reviewed here.

Sigma is the white-haired one, Models Prefer is the black-haired one

They both have the brush hair guard to help hold the hairs in place after use and washes.
The Sigma one is tighter, thus better at maintaining the shape of hairs on the brush

The Models Prefer brush is taller

The hairs on both look very similar but they're quite different

I'm not surprised that the Sigma angle blush brush has much softer hairs than the Models Prefer one. We all know that Sigma has high-quality brushes and cannot be defeated by cheaper brushes! The Models Prefer brush hairs aren't too scratchy but aren't too soft either. I think that after a wash or so, the hairs will become rough and will shed.

Models Prefer Angle Blush Brush: 3/5
-1 for hair quality
-1 for shedding

Now finally onto the fourth brush. I can't compare this brush with any other because this is my first powder brush. And what a shame, I don't use powders on my face :| But judging by the hairs, it feels exactly the same as the angle blush brush. I'm also going to give it the same score based on that.

Models Prefer Powder Brush: 3/5
-1 for hair quality
-1 for shedding

The only positive thing that I can say about the angle blush and powder brushes is that they pick up a lot of product on the brush because the hairs aren't that soft. One swipe of blush or powder would be enough and this will help save me from running out of products too soon.

So overall, I have some mixed feelings on this brush set. It's definitely a brush set that is suitable for beginners and also suitable for someone who has an interest in makeup. It could even be good for a gift. The only worthy brushes of use are the foundation and concealer brushes and I'm likely to pass on the angle blush and powder brushes. As a replacement for my foundation brush and for me to just have a concealer brush that I'd be glad to pick up and use, it was worth it. I could have bought a brand new Ecotools foundation brush for the same price as this set but I didn't want to risk going through the same problem again.

I think I'll be sticking to my Sigma angle blush brush and maybe use the Models Prefer one when I've been too lazy to wash the Sigma one x] That probably won't happen but if something goes wrong with my Sigma one, the Models Prefer brush will be the replacement.

Models Prefer Starter Face Brush Set: 8/10
-1 for the hairs of two not-so-good brushes (angle blush and powder)
-1 for the shedding of hair

So that's it for the review! I will now leave you now with a tutorial video of which I used 3 of the 4 brushes. I filmed this last night, hope you like it.

Since these brushes are aimed at beginners, I thought I'd do a little beginners guide to applying makeup and doing REALLY quick smokey eyes with neutral colours such as golds and browns, using my palette and lashes from Daiso. Sorry there's no talking, I do however have a few captions here and there for instructions. Also, it's been sped-up so that it's not so dragged on, and to show you really how quick and easy it is to achieve this look!

I remember Tam requested me to do a tutorial because she wasn't sure how to apply eyeshadow. I was going to do it for my Park Bom Inspired Look but that's a little outdated now haha.

Oh and excuse the crappy, yellow lighting :/ And also how pixelated it is... Windows Movie Maker decreases the quality after I publish the video :(

My High School Graduation ♥

Hi everyone, it's been a while since I've made a proper blog entry! Well I can explain; I've been planning what wear for my high school graduation. And by wearing I mean accessories, how to have my hair, nails and make-up. Thanks for all the suggestions and tips in my post about dressing for occasions :)

Last night, I officially graduated from high school! It was a very special and exciting night for all of us and I'm glad that the night went smoothly and no one (that I saw) fell on or off stage :D We were all worried about stacking it during the night in front of everyone because of our high heels and we didn't need any embarrassment for our final lasting impressions x]

While many or shall I say the majority of the graduates wore long/maxi dresses, the very few of the minority wore shorter dresses, including me. I've never worn or owned a long/maxi dress before so I didn't want to risk wearing one for my graduation night. Even more chance of me stacking it because of its length :( Wearing a shorter dress meant that people would be able to see my heels :P And I didn't have to hold it while I walked.

Not only that but I actually got this dress that I wore from my aunty which she gave it to me I guess as a graduation gift. That meant that I didn't go out and spend money on a new dress, saved again =] Although I was initially worried about someone wearing the same dress (hence my other reasoning for not buying one), I didn't see anyone wear the same dress, so it was all good! And many got theirs made. In the end, I was happy to be rocking my shorter, layered dress - it made me unique =]

My make-up (Eyes) FOTD

FOTD: Smokey Eyes
Looks like it's got a little bit of blue, pink and purple as well as the greys that I used.
Was just wearing vaseline lip balm at this stage (my 'holy grail' product, moistens and softens my lips well!)

Dimple face, lol

Products used:

FACE:
- Australis Face Primer
- Revlon ColorStay Velvet Creme in Natural Tan (my day and night foundation)
- EcoTools Foundation Brush

EYES:
- Urban Decay Primer Potion
- Rimmel Quad in 001 Smokey Noir
-Various brushes from Australis and Sigma
- Face of Australia Black Liquid Eyeliner
- NYX Black Pencil Liner
- Criss-cross false eyelashes
- Maybelline Pulse Perfection Mascara Waterproof
- QVS Eyelash Curler

NAILS:
- TBN Nail Polish in Gilt
Kept my nails simple. I wanted to use nail stickers and all that but I decided not to.

LIPS:
- Vaseline Lip Balm
- Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in 131 Ginger Rose

HAIR AND ACCESSORIES:
- Mini Straightening Iron for the curls
- Floral Pink Hair Band from Forever New
- White Clip-on Flower from Forever New
- Earrings from Diva
- Necklace from Equip
- Bracelet and rings from Zamels

My dress, shoes and bag listings would be for an OOTD :P

I love the curls/waves I got out of using my mini straightener! I liked it more than using my curling iron. Putting the band on my hair was a last minute thing but I'm glad I used it to achieve more volume to my hair. Thanks to my friend Cathy for suggesting that I buy both the white flower clip and the hair band :) I actually just bought them yesterday, the day of the graduation! So glad.

It got a little annoying though, when it kept going up and almost slipping off :( So by the end of the night my mum told me to take it off, so I did. Oh and my mum wasn't initially going to be a my graduation (she doesn't see it as a big deal compared to uni grads lol) but then she decided that she'll come, and I wanted her to so that she could hold onto my clutch since we weren't allowed to have it with us for the ceremony. Lots of walking around for us, no bags to be held!

I arrived just in time for the whole photo of all of the graduates! The photo will be online on the photographer's site (I think) so when that's up I'll upload it here.

Someone's relative took this photo next to the cameraman. It might be hard to spot me but I'm on the right wearing the headband :) About the 4th row.

We waited in the waiting rooms for all the students and guests to be seated (the whole school came to the graduation ceremony because it was also a school mass) and we had this whole entrance where we had to walk through the aisle with drums playing in the background while holding a battery-operated candle in a glass. It was dark inside for this and I forgot to turn on my candle =[ LOL fail. We handed it to a year 11 as a way of 'passing down' the year 12 leadership and responsibilities. After that we'd just sit down and I was lucky enough to be seated in the front row =]

I've been at a Catholic school all my life and so last night was also an end of year celebration as well as a graduation. An end of year celebration of thanks involved with praying and blessing. After this was our graduation ceremony and the school captain made her speech. It was so touching and emotional, I wanted to cry! But then my makeup would've ran and looked messy haha.

We went out to the foyer and lined up in order of our last names and classes. This was our time to walk up onto the stage and collect our flowers and certificate. I wasn't nervous at all! We already had a rehearsal in the morning so I knew exactly what to do and where to walk to. my heels made my feet hurt but luckily I managed to walk and not tumble down the stairs so trip up along the walk around the perimeter x)

After everyone received their certificate and orchids, we walked out of the ceremony to the school hymn =] That was it, we had all finally graduated! Many hugs and cheers and of course, photos!

The Asians :D
I'm so glad I wore higher heels this time, or else I'd look shorter than everyone
None of us are shorter than 160cm x) We're considered tall for Asians
Missing one that didn't show up to grad!

Credits to Cathy for this photo ♥

Me and my friend Jenny
Gah she's like the same height as me when I wear my super high heels! She only wore flats
My hair looks more brown in this photo. It's meant to be like this because I dyed it a few weeks ago

Hair band off. Mum took this photo =]
Woah my eyes look super huge and dolly o_o No circle lenses!

There are more photos that were taken with other people's cameras but they haven't uploaded them on Facebook yet! When they do I'll add them here. I took photos with teachers but they're not that nice haha. I'm very picky with my photos, I think I look bad in the majority of photos that are taken of me anyway :P

As I was saying before, I had a morning rehearsal for the graduation. What sucked was that I had to wake up at 7 am. For someone who has slept in ever since their exams have been completed, it was hard sleeping earlier than usual and waking up as though I had school again -__- Not fun at all! I felt so sick in the morning from the lack of sleep but I plowed through the rehearsal. Seeing everyone again made me happy :)

I guess this could be another morning to night look? I had to go back to school after the rehearsal to get a ticket for my mum to be at my graduation. My LAST time being at school as a 'student' =/ Went into the toilets lol and took these photos:

Almost a no-makeup face. Just a bit of eyeliner and curled lashes.
Waiting for my hair to grow longer!

OOTD - Very Casual
Free Fusion Tee, Supre Shorts, BlueBird Bag, Rubi Shoes
It was just a rehearsal so I didn't see the point in dressing up. Also, it was a humid day, no layers.
I was slightly surprised when some of you said that you thought I was petite and shorter than 160cm xD I'm taller than this 'full-length' mirror haha. I guess I have petite proportions (clothing sizes) but in height I wouldn't call myself petite x]

That's all to this post ^-^ Sorry if it was really long!

ANYWAY, I'm thinking for my next post or future posts to do a VLOG so you can all see and hear me talk! But the problem is... I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO TALK ABOUT O_O Does anyone have any ideas or requests? I'm thinking of doing a tutorial, but that might be boring? Should i talk during the tutorial? HELP ME :D

Park Bom 2010 MAMA Inspired Look

Hi guys, so this is my first ever 'inspired look' post. If you're not too sure what it means, basically I have taken the picture of a particular person and recreated their make-up with the items that I have. In no way do I believe that I look like this person, this is just my interpretation of their make-up and my own replica of it :)

I've chosen to replicate the make up of Korean pop singer Park Bom. Those who are familiar with K-pop would know that she is in the girl group 2NE1. 2NE1 recently attended an awards show called MAMA which stands for Mnet Asian Music Awards. Before watching the awards show streamed online (thanks to Allkpop) I was able to check out the red carpet pictures :)

The red carpet pictures which caught my eye first were 2Ne1's and if you're familiar with them, you'd know that they have very stylish outfits and eye make-up, which I think is so awesome :D

Luckily there was a close-up of Park Bom when she was on the red carpet:

FACE

• Bold black eyeliner

• Blue eyeshadow

Pink lips
• False lashes
• Grey lenses

HAIR AND OUTFIT
• Back to having black hair!
• Side fringe and high pony tail - one of her signature hair styles
• Black and white patterned dress
• Black belt
• Black pumps

2NE1
L-R: Minzy, Bom, Dara and CL
Congrats to the girls on winning 4 awards that night:
• Album of the Year - 'To Anyone'
• Artist of the Year
• Female Group Award
• Best Music Video - 'Can't Nobody'
And Bom for winning Best Digital Single - 'You and I'

[Credits to Allkpop for the images]

It was an amazing awards show to watch, I loved all of the performances and it was definitely worth staying up and watching the live stream :) I'm so glad that Australian time is just a few hours ahead of the time in Asian countries!

Anyway back on topic, Bom's eye make-up is definitely the boldest compared to the rest of the 2NE1 members. I also took screenshots when Bom did her acceptance speech for her award:

bom
These screenshots really helped me with recreating her look =)

At first I was surprised that she didn't accessorise on the night, I thought she'd actually be wearing a pair of earrings at least, or some jewellery! As well as trying to replicate her make-up, I also tried my best to replicate her outfit. I obviously wasn't very close with that because it's always hard to match the outfits of the 2NE1 girls haha - they can be quite 'out there' and wacky at times.

• Zebra-striped singlet - Free Fusion
• Black shorts - Miss Understood
• Silver belt - Katies
I had to make do with what I had :( No black belt or similar dress!

Under my lamp's bright light, the blue doesn't show up that vibrant
I toned down the eyeliner a lot, mainly because my double eyelids aren't as wide as Bom's so it wouldn't have looked as nice if I had thick black eyeliner

This is everything I used for the look
• Revlon ColorStay Velvet Creme Makeup
• Ecotools Foundation Brush
• Urban Decay Primer Potion
• PUPA 4Eyes Blue Eyeshadow Quad
• NYX Black Eyeliner
• Face of Australia Charcoal Liquid Eyeliner
• Rimmel Volume Express Mascara
• Sigma Blending Brush
• Eyeshadow Brush
• Australis Countoured Eyeshadow Brush
• QVS Eyelash Curler
• Duo Eyelash Glue in Clear/White
• Rimmel Moisture Renew Lipstick in Nude Delight
• Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick in Pink Blush
• G&G BT02 Grey Lenses

It was hard for me to get the high ponytail that Bom has :( I don't know how she can have it put up so high, I tried but it kept pulling my hair and hurting too much -__-

The best I could do - a pretty messy ponytail

I noticed that Bom's eyelashes were thicker at the ends so I glued extra lashes on the ends of my falsies to make them thicker. They were the left-over bits from trimming the lashes:

These lashes are really shiny and soft. You can get them from Kiwiberry1

And now to lots more pictures of me, closer shots, with flash, different angles etc. :P

I used two lipsticks because my Pink Blush lipstick (Dupe of MAC Lady Gaga lipstick) is too much of a Barbie pink and Bom's lips weren't that pink :S I toned it down by using a nude lipstick on top

Without flash, the lenses look very dark and so does the rest of my make-up. Should I review these lenses? They're going to expire soon...

Hey where did my high ponytail go :( ? It was meant to be on the side... fail.

Better shot of the belt

My best 'Bom impression' of the first photo
The blue eyeshadow showed up really well on my webcam :) This is more of how it turned out, and more similar to Bom's eyeshadow colours
I flipped the photo to other way to match the way Bom parts her fringe hehe

It was a lot of fun recreating the look ^-^ I don't normally wear blue eyeshadows out so I really enjoyed playing around with the colours on my PUPA quad. Having the blue quad came in handy, and so did my grey lenses! These lenses are about to expire, but I just got myself a new pair of grey lenses similar to these :D

I think i might do more inspired looks on my blog in the future, what do you think :) ? I could take requests, show a tutorial... anything really =]

Haul and First High-end Product Purchase

Hello :) My last few blog posts were about tags and giveaways and so now I'm back to blogging about one of my interests - beauty.

I have no school lessons on a Friday afternoon which is really convenient for me because I get to leave early and have a great end to the school week and have a lovely start to the weekend :D

Today I went shopping after school for about an hour in town by myself (I'm very independent) and managed to purchase a few items. I feel so broke now but I guess I do think that it was worth it hehe. I went to two of the Priceline stores in town today. Pretty sure that the ladies who served me recognised me since I am quite a regular customer. And it isn't hard to not forget me - I always wear uniform when I go. They must wonder why I always go to Priceline :) Haha I really like going there.

Here's a picture of the things that I bought today:

I didn't by the Marie Claire magazine from Priceline, I bought it from a newsagent. I decided to include it in this picture because of the free gift. Not sure if you can see it but it came with a full-size Este
è Lauder Pure Colour Lipgloss in Passion Fruit Shimmer :D

The magazine was only $9.20 and apparently the lipgloss itself retails for $42AUD so this is definitely worth it! Especially if you just want to try it (like me hehe). I never buy high-end products so that's why it's a little exciting for me to finally 'purchase' something high-end at a drugstore price.. or you could say I purchased it for no price ;)

To my Australians readers, you should definitely get your copy of September's Marie Claire! Who doesn't love a freebie ;D

I wouldn't have known about this if
Adeline hadn't mentioned it on her blog so BIG thank you to her for giving all her readers the heads up! I won't be doing a review or any swatches of this product but please do check out Adeline's post: http://through-beauty-eyes.blogspot.com/2010/08/estee-lauder-pure-colour-passion-fruit.html
Now a closer to look at my other products:

St. Ives Fresh Skin Apricot Scrub
I've read many positive reviews about this product so I decided to give it a go :) I normally use a gentle face wash but now I can use an exfoliating scrub. I will try it tomorrow and tweet about it. Anyway, here is a detail review: http://www.bellasugar.com.au/Skincare-Reviews-St-Ives-Fresh-Skin-Invigorating-Apricot-Scrub-8403517

Miss Priss Perfume Body Spray with 5 Piece Brush Set
Aww! It's all pink and pretty ^_^ This really attracted me and I just had to buy it, I couldn't resist the pink mini brushes in a little pouch like that! The brushes are really soft and that powder brush is definitely my favourite out of the 5. Can't wait to use them!
I already have the perfume spray and I don't think I'll need a back-up for mine so I really want to give this spray away. It smells really sweet and girlie. Hmm.. does anyone know anything about international parcel/shipping guidelines? I don't know whether aerosol cans are allowed to be flown over. If someone knows, please tell me :) If it's not permitted then I may use it as a little giveaway thing for my Australian readers, since it won't have to go through customs etc.

Australis Mineral Eyeshadow Contouring Brush and Ecotools Bamboo Foundation Brush

I like how they're in really handy zip-lock packaging to store the brush.
I could never find a decent contouring brush but now I have. Australis is an Australian brand and at Priceline they are currently having a 20% off sale for all Australis products.
Ecotools is a well-known brand and so I decided to see whether I'd like it and also because I wanted to do my bit to contribute to the whole 'earth-friendly' thing. This is actually my first foundation brush haha! Many people would be shocked but hey, I usually use my fingers or my sponges to apply it on and it does the job well. I'm going to try using a brush and test whether I am able to evenly apply the foundation and avoid streaky marks, not that I ever had a problem with applying my foundation in the first place :P

BeautySnapz Eyeliner Sealer

When I saw this I had no idea what it was o_O I looked at the picture and suddenly I remembered how my top eyeliner right above my eyelashes would fade. I use a liquid eyeliner which is not waterproof, hence this product would be perfect for me. Inside there is a pack of 24 q-tips with a small amount of liquid inside of them which must be the sealer. Are you not sure how it works? Neither was I. On the back of the box there are instructions and there are also some on the site:
http://www.snaps.com.au/eyeline-sealer.html

Looking forward to using it to see whether it will prevent my liquid eyeliner from fading.

There are many other products similar to this such as eye make-up remover, cuticle conditioner which are on the site.

Beauty Style False Eyelashes
These are very inexpensive falsies, only $3.95 a pair. I could get cheaper pairs but they don't come in such lovely packaging and are not as good as this quality. They have little diamantes stuck on them :) So pretty. When I try them out I will take pictures and upload them onto my blog. They came with glue but I don't think I will be using it because I prefer using glue that I buy separately. The one I'm using now is Duo. For anyone who wears falsies, I recommend that you buy your own glue because the glue that comes with falsies is not the best quality.
Saving the best til last! Haha, not really. If you've been reading all of the above then I thank you so much! I have written a lot xD The last 3 items that I bought today are all from one brand called 'Pupa Milano'. It's a brand from Italy and I have never heard of it before until today. I was walking through the aisles in Priceline and some ticketed prices caught my eyes.. the entire Pupa range was 50%! I only managed to grab 3 items because: 1) There wasn't a lot for me to choose from (a lot was already gone!) 2) I wasn't sure whether I'd have enough money 3) I wasn't sure about the quality of this brand, since it was completely unknown to me. I am sure that they have always been in Priceline but I just never paid attention. I'm glad I did today... One item I want to talk about in particular is the Pupa Compact Eyeshadow
Very unique packaging! I was really curious to see how that little white spongy ball worked when I looked at the tester in-store. The little red plastic that sticks out is the handle for the sponge. The sponge is detachable from the eyeshadow compact and what you do is collect both shades of eyeshadow at the same time with the sponge and apply them to to your eyelid. The purpose is to create dual tones to your eyes with just one single swipe. The one I bought was 04 because I didn't have a green and gold eyeshadow. I think these two colours complement each other really well. Oh and also, they are really pigmented! I did mention that I bought 3 Pupa cosmetics, right? Yep I did but I won't be talking about the other 2 products because.. I'm going to add them to my blog giveaway which I will host when I feel that the time is right :D I want one of you guys to try out some products from this brand because I think it's great for their prices. To see more about Pupa Milano cosmetics, visit: http://pupa.it/ENG/default.aspx In case you didn't catch on, I will have a blog giveaway in the near future =] Either at the end of this year or early next year because right now my main focus is school as I am in my final year D: The end is coming closer so I won't be able to blog often. Lately I have been going okay with updates but it will become less frequent in the coming weeks and months. Just bare with me :] I will continue to use my Twitter daily to keep you guys updated if you wish. EXTREMELY long post I apologise! It has taken me a really long time to write. I hope you all have a lovely weekend :)
xx Jennifer
P.S. Thank you to my 50+ followers, you guys are awesome :D
